Forum of Mediterranean Women Journalists – 5th edition

Forum of Mediterranean Women Journalists – 5th edition

#WomenLivesMatter #WLM #PressFreedomMatter #FMWJ

ONLINE WEBINARS on 22-23-24-25-26-27-28-29-30 November 2020 and 1 December

The Forum of Mediterranean women journalists launches the #WomenLivesMatter #PressFreedomMatters theme: women’s lives matter, freedom of the press matters. What is the information on rights, and what are rights, 70 years after the approval of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)?

The Forum, which is now going to hold its fifth edition, was born with the aim of “creating bridges, breaking down walls: promoting reflection on the role of investigative and frontier women journalists, as a garrison of Democracy, and therefore of Peace”.
This year the ECHR turns 70 and it is on its actual application, especially in relation to the right of expression and information, that the entire reflection of the journalists of the fifth edition of the Forum will focus.
Due to the pandemic, the Forum will take place online, thanks to a platform reserved for the Forum on Skipin, which will allow the traceability and certification of attendance.

Its main themes:

  • Articles 9 and 10 of the ECHR as well as Article 19 of the Declaration of Human Rights, which establish the inviolability of freedom of expression and information, are largely disregarded.
  • At the time of the COVID-19 pandemic and 25 years after the approval of the Beijing agreement, women as well as women journalists are still forced to deal with the dangerous retreat of their civil rights.
  • With the retreat of the civil rights of women journalists there is a risk of reducing freedom of expression and information across Europe: many studies have confirmed this.

What can we do?

It is necessary to analyze the quality of information in Italy and in Europe, to create spaces of freedom of expression for women journalists. As happened in every other edition, the Forum intends to represent a moment of analysis of current trends as well as a proposal of universal themes on which to direct the debate for the upcoming year.
The speakers offer a quality contribution on how to tell reality through the female gaze, by narrating their personal “war” to affirm the right to tell the fight against discrimination and stereotypes conveyed through information.
At the end of the Forum a concrete “output” is always proposed.

In the first edition: the Memorandum of Understanding between the Puglia Region, Giulia women journalists, the Order of Journalists, Assostampa and the Apulian regional newspapers for the use of gender language in newspapers, on TV, on radio, in Public Administration documents, drawn up by Giulia women journalists in collaboration with the Equality Councilor, UniSalento and UniBa.
In the second edition of the Forum: the presentation of the “Manifesto of Venice” and the related book on the language of violence.
In the third edition: the “Bank of 100 experts” created by the Giulia women Journalists association.
In the fourth edition: the “Assisi Charter” for ethical journalism and the “Media women and sport” Manifesto were presented, together with two new guidelines for the application of professional ethics to journalistic practice

In the fifth edition we will present the results of the monitoring on the impact of smart working of women journalists on the level of freedom of expression and information during the lockdown in Italy.
The “Peace reporter 2020” prizes will also be awarded.

PROGRAMME:

22 November (11 am – 1 pm)

PANEL 1 – Libertà va cercando ch’è sì cara – Longing for Freedom

The coronavirus crisis is increasing pressure on press freedom, especially in some nations, according to Reporters Without Borders’ 2020 report. The next ten years will be crucial for the freedom of the press, due to a series of converging crises. A geopolitical crisis, due to the aggressiveness of the authoritarian regimes towards journalists. A technological crisis, whereby the absence of adequate regulation in the era of digital communication has created information chaos. Propaganda, advertising and journalism are in fact in direct competition. And finally, an economic crisis that has caused the impoverishment of quality journalism.

PANEL 5 – Environment, for a “green deal” of journalism

Carrying out journalistic inquiries on hot topics that generate environmental conflicts is increasingly difficult also due to the growing wave of fake news and skepticism towards science. The Polish government continues to fight its own battle against the LGBQT community. Minister of Justice and Attorney General Zbigniew Ziobro announced that Poland would leave the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, as it is contrary to the Polish constitution. Meanwhile, attacks and arrests follow one another.

PANEL 7 – Our daily mafia: negotiations and scenarios

Can it be scientifically proven that the mafia takes GDP from the state? According to a study by Bocconi University of Milan: yes, it can. The study, carried out on Puglia and Basilicata, made it possible to isolate some parameters before and after the colonization of the two regions by the Camorra and the ‘Ndrangheta. The development of an autonomous mafia organization, the Sacra Corona Unita, did the rest: the study, coordinated by Paolo Pinotti, shows that the advent of organized crime has led to a reduction between 15 and 20% of the pro regional capita over 30 years. With this scenario, what are the current and future contexts of the mafias in Italy? How do you write about the mafia? Is there a “gender issue” in the mafia structure?

A think tank of twenty-four experts and scholars from various disciplinary sectors, gathered in CREIS, the Centro Ricerca Europa per l’Innovazione Sostenibile, proposed a global vision on the possible and necessary future after the pandemic. At the center, together with information, is the role of women’s research and science.

Gender-based violence is a violation of human rights, and as such it must be dealt with in the news. It is not just a problem for women and it is not just for women to deal with it. This is why the Venice Manifesto was born: a deontological charter that clarifies how to deal with cases of femicide or sexual violence, avoiding to emphasize gory details with wrong words and images and putting the protection of victims at the center of nature.
A chapter of the Manifesto is also dedicated to the good grammatical practice of adopting the terms declined in the feminine for the roles held by women (mayor, minister, lawyer, engineer, etc.), as recommended by the Accademia della Crusca.

29 November (3-6 pm)

PANEL 12 – The future of women and information in Africa

Ethiopia has elected its first president, the only female head of state in Africa: diplomat Sahlework Zewde. Her communication is direct, she speaks a lot to women and about women: “We must build a society that rejects oppression of women,” Sahlework said, after being unanimously elected in a joint session of the two Houses of Parliament. “If someone thinks that I talk a lot about women, wait until you hear everything I have to say,” said the new president. “When there is no peace in the country, mothers get frustrated, so we must work for peace to the good of our mothers”.
Information and digital media are an effective tool to combat female genital mutilation. Although illegal in the EU, and some member states prosecute those who mutilate girls, even when the mutilations are carried out outside the country, it is estimated that around 600,000 women living in Europe have been victims of this practice, and that another 180,000 are at risk in 13 European countries. A group of five Kenyan students (“The Restorers”) who developed an application (App) to help victims and potential victims of female genital mutilation, was shortlisted for the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for the freedom of thought.
Their candidacy marks an important step in the fight against female genital mutilation, and encourages younger people to play an active role in their community.

PANEL 15 – “No es hora de callar” (No longer time to be silent)

Jineth Bedoya Lima, Winner of the 2020 edition of the World press freedom prize “Guillermo Cano” by Unesco, Colombian investigative woman journalist for her commitment has paid a heavy price.
She worked for El Spectator, a Bogota newspaper, and for some time she had been publishing a serial investigative report into an arms trafficking, which she had discovered, between a group of paramilitaries and some government officials.
On 25 May 20 years ago she went to the prison in Modello, because she had an appointment to do an interview with an official.
It was a trap: she was kidnapped, tortured and raped by three men who were sentenced after three decades.
However, the prosecution assumes at least 27 accomplices and principals, who are currently still unpunished.
Today she is deputy director of El Tiempo and continues her activity as an investigative woman journalist.
Her commitment as a woman journalist and as an activist has led hundreds of South American women to denounce: “No es hora de callar”, “It’s no longer time to be silent” is the name of the movement she founded.

Speaker:

  • Jineth Bedoya Lima, “El Tiempo” Vice-director

PANEL 16 – Barcelona +25, which Euro-Mediterranean identity

What information on the Mediterranean? Is information able to build a Euro-Mediterranean identity and to act as a glue between the countries bordering the Mare Nostrum?
The 25th anniversary of the signing of the “Barcelona Process” is celebrated on 27 and 28 November, which set three priority objectives for the Euro-Mediterranean area:

  • political objective – The creation of a policy to guarantee the security and stability of the Mediterranean region, also through the writing of a Charter for the stability and security of the Mediterranean;
  • economic objective – Promote the economic development of the Mediterranean region, also through the signing of specific bilateral agreements between the European Union and each of the partners with the medium-term objective of establishing a free trade area in 2010 (EU-MEFTA);
  • cultural objective – The creation of a constant and strong cultural exchange between the civil societies of the member countries. This point implicitly refers to the promotion of knowledge and respect for reciprocal cultures (as regards civil and political rights).

The process involves the use of both bilateral agreements between Member States and the definition of regional policies. The current ten Mediterranean partners benefit from funds from the European Investment Bank under the MEFTA Mediterranean development program.

Was it an effective process?

  • Laura Marchetti, associate professor in Didactics of cultures, University of Reggio Calabria, former Undersecretary for the Environment

THE PROJECT OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WOMEN JOURNALISTS FORUM

Close to 25 November, the international day against violence against women, the Forum of Mediterranean Women Journalists takes place every year.
Since its first edition in 2016, it has been held in Puglia, a borderland, a crossroads of cultures and peoples, an ideal bridge over the Mediterranean and a real place for the days of the Forum, which attract journalists and independent reporters, but also experts, activists, scientists and university researchers committed to human rights and gender studies. All together to tell and testify their stories, from the varied shores of the Euro-Mediterranean countries.
The Forum was born from an idea of the investigative woman journalist Marilù Mastrogiovanni and is organized by Giulia Giornaliste, the IdeaDinamica cooperative and the Med women journalists association, with the aim of “creating bridges, breaking down walls: promoting a reflection on journalism of investigative women journalists, as a garrison of Democracy and therefore of Peace”.
More than 20 years after the World Women’s Conference in Beijing – which produced the most progressive declaration on women’s rights in the world shared by 189 countries – the Forum of Mediterranean Journalists offers an in-depth analysis of the current condition of women.
It will be an analysis built through the different experiences of the participating women, many of whom coming from ‘difficult’ places and societies, especially for the female gender.
The purpose of the event is certainly to monitor the gender human right gap, but it also responds to the practical need to identify possible actions to stimulate the advancement of rights in European, Middle Eastern, North African and Balkan countries. Like the meshes of a large network dropped between the shores of the Mediterranean (and beyond) with stories, reportages, surveys, experiences, directly proposed by the protagonists of the ongoing change.
The construction of a dialogue focuses on the image of the investigative woman journalist, together with activists and experts, as well as women who through their profession are the “guardians” of human rights defenders, of Democracy, of Peace.
All of this has been possible thanks to the involvement and support (since the first edition) of some of the most important international organizations and women’s associations.

The Forum aims to:

1. promote the work of women journalists, as “envoys of peace”, as a “presidium of democracy” and “human rights defenders”

2. Give space and visibility to the investigative work carried out by women, by amplifying their voice

3. Strengthen the bond between investigative women journalists and their public, by relaunching the contents they carry

4. Build a positive image of the woman journalist and her investigative work in defense of citizens’ rights and facts, by counteracting fake news

5. Contribute to fighting hate speech, sexism and gender stereotypes, through professional training aimed at journalists and students

6. Disseminate practices for the correct use of language – e.g. written, spoken, video – so that it is free from sexism and stereotypes

7. Produce digital media for the dissemination of the testimonies of women journalists

8. Encourage networking between investigative journalists and civil society experts / activists and gender studies scholars

9. Amplify the resonance of the work done by journalists – the issues investigated – 365 days a year
